Mini Vacation Favorites
Each spring and fall we visit Epcot at least three times a week for the “Flower Power” and “Eat to the Beat” concerts. We grab a soft warm pretzel from the Germany pavilion and listen to the likes of Davy Jones or the Temptations followed by a lakeside view of the Illuminations fireworks show. It is an amazing way to end an otherwise normal weekday.
As a special treat, we split a frozen margarita from the margarita stand just outside the Mexico pavilion. Lines are usually long, but for a reason - they’re worth the wait! Recently, the Disney Mexico Restaurant received an overhaul and a new menu. The Empandas de Queso we shared were excellent.
Favorite Rides and Attractions
Sometimes we’ll briefly hop into a park just to experience some magic. At Magic Kingdom we head straight for Mickey’s Philharmagic or Splash Mountain. At Epcot we really enjoy the new Soarin’ ride, based on Disneyland's Soarin' Over California. Our new favorite at MGM is the Lights, Motors, Action stunt car show, but Tower of Terror will always be a “must do”. And, we can never leave Animal Kingdom without seeing the live Lion King performance. To get Disney rides information, visit Orlando Ride Guide.
For a slower pace, a walk on the boardwalk brings back childhood memories of summer vacations at the Jersey Shore. A slice of pizza or a corn dog from one of the boardwalk vendors makes the trip complete. If we’re feeling energetic, there is actually a lighted walking path that allows you to walk all the way to Disney MGM Studios.
We can make a day just out of visiting the various Disney hotel grounds (and sometimes we do). Any time we have visitors who are not purchasing Orlando theme park tickets, we take them on a tour of our favorite hotels. You can get lost for an afternoon at the Caribbean Beach hotel strolling the beaches and listening to Calypso music. Learn about plans for new luxury vacation home rentals near Disney.
The Polynesian is a favorite for special occasion meals either at Ohanas or the Polynesian Luau. Our favorite Disney character meal is Cinderella’s Gala Feast at the 1900 Park Fare in the Grand Floridian. At the Magic Kingdom there’s just something special about grabbing a hot dog at Casey’s on Main Street just before fireworks are about to begin.
Favorite Rainy Day Activity
Spend some time shopping in the Downtown Disney area and then take a boat ride over to the Port Orleans resort for a quick bite of their famous Chicken Andouille gumbo. We also love to visit the East and West Innoventions Pavillion at Epcot to experience new and exciting activities and technology including the opportunity to ride a Segway. You can try a Segway for free at the Pavillion or you can make reservations to take a Segway Tour around Epcot.
Christmas is a spectacular time of year… it even snows at the parks! Favorites include the huge tree at the entrance to Magic Kingdom, the Candlelight Processional at Epcot, and the Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights display at MGM. Grand Floridian is our “must do” hotel for admiring the decorations and listening to carolers and bell ringers.
